£2m Lotto boost for Olympics 2012
Olympic NewsMore than £2m has already been raised towards a £750m National Lottery target to help fund the 2012 Olympics in London, it has been announced.

The total was revealed at the launch of the second edition of the Go For Gold scratch card game.

Winning athletes from every Games since 1948, including Sir Matthew Pinsent and Sally Gunnell, were at the British Museum, in London, for the launch.

The Minister for Sport, Richard Caborn, praised public support for the Games.

"People feel they are part of what is going to be a great success in 2012," he said.

Millions sold

Since the original Go For Gold game was introduced on 28 July, the card has achieved sales of more than £1m a week.

Dianne Thompson, chief executive of lottery operator Camelot, said 20 million new scratch cards had been printed to follow the 11 million first edition cards.

"Sales are well over £1m a week and £2m has already been raised towards the £750m - £2m down and £748m to go," she said.

Olympians at Wednesday's launch included boxing flyweight Terence Spinks, 67, from West Ham, London, who won gold in Melbourne in 1956.

The oldest champion at the event was Bertie Bushnell, 96, from Henley, who won the double sculls rowing event in 1948 when London last hosted the Games.
